Project:
Designing and building a link between the programs "Basware" and "Smartstream" at the KNVB
Problem:
The KNVB uses the Windows program "Basware" as part of their billing and payments system. The payments
are run through the program "Smartstream", which runs on a SUN Solaris server. THe bills prepared by Basware
got imported into Smartstream by hand, using several old and unmaintained programs. The entire process was
extremly sensitive, and would hang or crash when fed wrong data.
Major issues:
THere was only a single person that knew how to run the entire manual process, using a 40 document listing
all the various steps. If errors occured, the system was left in an unusable state, and had to be carefully
cleaned so that payments could still be made. The average import took about 3 hours, and the process was run
multiple times a week.
Solution:
The entire process has been automated, enabling all employees to import the payment data, taking only a few
minutes. Invalid data is detected, and handled seperately afterwards, making sure the system will never
enter an unusable state.
